Our History

Muslim Community School, Inc. and Alim Academy, Inc. (MCS/AA) was established as the Muslim Community School in 1985 by a group of concerned parents and community members. The Muslim Community School is for students in grades PK-8, and Alim Academy serves students in grades 9-12.  Together, the schools provide an excellent education that meets county and state standards within an Islamic environment.

MCS/AA was incorporated as a nonprofit institution in the State Of Maryland, Montgomery County on April 24, 1985, and was granted a tax exemption under Section 501 [C][3] in July 1986. The school also received State Sales and Use Tax Exemption status in 1997.

Alim Academy was awarded the Certificate of Approval in the early part of 1989, gaining approval to operate a Kindergarten to 8th Grade program of studies.  It continued to expand its educational program by gaining state approval to complete the high school grade. This was done by adding a grade as needed and appropriate for student enrollment on a grade-by-grade basis. AA received approval to graduate the first Senior Class in January 2006 and held it first graduation in June 2006.  MCS also provides a Pre-School program for young children from the ages of 2 to 4 years with a license being approved by the Early Childhood Department of Montgomery County.

AA is independent in its management structure, under the guidance of the Board of Trustees (BOT) and Principal. The schools have a distinct set of bylaws and regulatory policies that enable it to conform to requirements of the Maryland State Board of Education.
