Middle School Program (Grades 6-8)

Eligible Students:
The Middle School Program is for students who have successfully completed Grades 5-7. Students who have not successfully passed can enter the program of the repeated grade for remediation and review.

Registration Begins:
April 1, 2008. To register for the middle school Summer LAF, mail the completed registration form and appropriate payment (MasterCard, VISA, check or money order) to: Muslim Community School, 7917 Montrose Road, Potomac, MD 20854. Incomplete registrations will not be processed. Registration may also be done online at www.mymcs.org.

Registration Ends:
June 20, 2008—First session
July 18, 2008—Second session

Class Schedule:
Full Day – 8:00am – 3:15pm Daily (There is no half day program for Middle School Students) Students will attend academic blocks including, Math review, Islamic Studies/Qur’an, and Language Arts academic block. In addition to these, students can select an enrichment activity and one foreign language elective per session. See the table below:

**Special activities include on-campus carnivals, field days and competitive sporting events. In addition, there will be off-campus special activities such as laser tag, rock climbing, bowling, hiking and other adventures.

Tuition:
One Complete Session - $650
Two Complete Sessions - $1200
Multiple child discount: Full tuition for 1st child, 10% for 2nd sibling and 15% discount for 3rd sibling.

Grade Reports:
Each student enrolled in Summer LAF will receive a written evaluation of their progress on the last day of the session.

Medical Information:
It is the responsibility of the parents’ to notify the administration of MCS of any important medical information pertaining to your child(ren). On the first day of class, parents and/or legal guardians should complete the Medical information Form to MCS administrative office to report any special accommodations required for the student. The form can be picked up at Muslim Community School, 7917 Montrose Road, Potomac, MD 20854 or downloaded at: www.mymcs.org

COURSES:

Language Arts/Creative Writing, Grades 6-8 (MS-LA1)
This program will focus on developing the reading the creative writing skills of these middle school students. In this era of standardized testing, creative writing is becoming a lost art. Students will be exposed to poetry, prose, and literature from around the world. Teachers will then guide the students through methods of writing their own creative works. This class is open to students who have completed Grades 5, 6, or 7.

Language Arts/Journalism, Grades 6-8 (MS-LA2)
This session will focus on journalistic reporting. Students will be encouraged to become familiar with news and events. They will monitor and report events. Interviewing methods, note taking, ethics and objectivity will all be discussed and applied in this class. During this course, students will create an electronic periodical for weekly distribution. This class is open to students who have completed Grades 5, 6, or 7.

Mathematics, Fractions, Decimals and Percents (MS-M1)
This will be a technology-based mathematics enrichment/reinforcement course. Students will be given “hands-on” and inquiry-based projects in which they apply mathematic principles to “real-world” problems. All of these problems will incorporate the use of fractions, decimals, and/or percents to solve the problems. Students will work in small multi-age groups, and they will be given assessments and receive instruction to focus on their individual needs. At the end of this course, students will have reinforced vital skills in preparation for Algebra. This class is open to students who have successfully completed Grades 5, 6, or 7.

Mathematics, Probability, Ratios and Proportions (MS-M2)
This will be a technology-based mathematics enrichment/reinforcement course. Students will be given “hands-on” and inquiry-based projects in which they apply mathematic principles to “real-world” problems. All of these problems will incorporate the use of probability, ratios and/or proportions to solve the problems. Students will work in small multi-age groups, and they will be given assessments and receive instruction to focus on their individual needs. At the end of this course, students will have reinforced vital skills in preparation for Algebra. This class is open to students who have completed Grades 5, 6, or 7.

Islamic Studies/Qur’an, Grades 6-8 (MS-IS)
This engaging course will use Islamic teachings to reinforce good character and proper adab. Stories from the lives of our beloved Prophets (AS), lessons from ahadith and practical advice for living as a Muslim will be taught. Students will be encouraged to bring questions or concerns that they have about their faith. The students will be introduced to resources that can help them find answers to any questions they have about Islam. Since MCS is a nonsectarian school, when issues of Fiqh are introduced; they are addressed from both the Sunni and Shia Schools of Thought. This class is open to students who have successfully completed Grades 5, 6, or 7.

Swimming (G-SWIM; B-SWIM)
Students will have the opportunity to participate in a private swimming session, twice per week. During each one hour session, students will be given a 30-minute swimming lesson and 30-minutes of free swim. Swimmers will be divided into two classes, by ability. Boys and girls will be attending swimming sessions on two separate days.

ELECTIVES:

Art (MS-A) In this exciting course, students will be introduced to a variety of expressive media and styles. They will be assigned session long projects through which they can develop skill with one medium or explore the workings of all presented media. The session will culminate with an exhibition of students’ work.

Computer, Level I (MS-C1)
In this course students will Students will learn how to use a computer, printer, scanner, and other hardware. They will also learn keyboarding skills, proper care of disks, the use of removable storage devices and they will be exposed to commonly used software programs.

Computer, Level 2 (MS-C2)
This more advanced computer course focuses on students with prior computer experience. Students will master word processing and learn “real world” uses of other software and the Internet, through research adventures. Language Arts and scientific exploration will be emphasized.

Science (MS-SC)
This science course will focus on ‘hands-on’ research. Students will be enriched with lessons that augment the core curricula for grades 6-8. Multi-level learning teams will explore the fundamentals of Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Life Science. The Internet, computer applications, stories, experiments and observation will be applied on this learning journey.

History through the Arts (MS-HttA)
The goal of this course is to bring historic events to life through the use of the arts. Poetry, dramatic interpretation and visual arts will be used to study and analyze an event in history. Instructors will emphasize different aspects of artistic production, while imparting experiential knowledge about the selected period in history.

Foreign Languages (MS-FL)
Students will have the opportunity to choose a foreign language to study throughout a session. Classes will be offered in Spanish, French, Farsi, and Arabic to enhance students’ knowledge and expand their cultural horizons.
